Mandy Race

After more than 30 years teaching art and design in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the artist moved to Devon eight years ago, where the landscape and natural environment have become an important source of inspiration for her creative practice. Working across a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, printmaking and ceramics, she is naturally drawn to detail, texture and surface pattern. Her work explores the relationship between two- and three-dimensional forms, often bringing together carefully observed imagery with a more experimental approach to making. Her ceramic practice is predominantly hand-built and exploratory, combining sculptural form with richly considered surface pattern. Inspired by the landscape, nature and the human figure, each piece develops through a balance of observation, experimentation and an intuitive response to materials. Across her varied practice, she continues to explore the ways in which pattern, texture and form can capture the character and details of the world around her.
